Erasmus+
This mobility grant contributes to the travel and subsistence costs of on-site trainings (from 2 days to 4 weeks) at other institutions in Erasmus+ participating countries. The action fosters the share and transfer of knowledge and best practices, the acquisition of practical skills, and the discovery of new ideas, through training events.
Eligible to apply are:
- academic and administrative staff of ISTA
- with an employment contract valid 2 months before and 2 months after the mobility action
- with supervisor approval

ISTernships
The summer internship funded by ISTA in cooperation with the OeAD, provides a montly compensation for travel and subsistence costs among other benefits (up to 3 months), for BSc and MSc students wishing to “expand their scientific research experience” in any of/across the disciplines at ISTA.
The application deadline is in February every year.

EMBO Scientific Exchange Grants
The EMBO grants cover travel and subsistence costs of research visits (from 7 days to 3 months) at institutions in eligible countries. The aim is to facilitate collaborations with research groups with expertise and/or infrastructure that is unavailable at the host institution or laboratory.
Open to:
- researchers at all stages of their careers, with ⩾ 1Y experience at PhD level or equivalent
- visits at international institutions in EMBC Member States, Associated Member States or Cooperation Partners
- visits with a broader purpose than training in a specific technique
- visits that do not involve attendance to courses, workshops or symposia

Christian Boulin Fellowships (EMBL facilities visits)
These fellowships support travel and accommodation costs for young scientists visiting facilities at the EMBL sites, so they can learn and use the latest scientific techniques and advance their research projects.
How to apply
Applications can be submitted any time and will be assessed in a timely manner.
- Contact the relevant Facility or EMBL site to apply for a visit and discuss the feasibility of the project.
- In case of positive evaluation, submit the following to email:
- Supporting statement from head of Facility, confirming feasibility and access
- Up to 1000-word overview of your project — including a brief explanatory statement demonstrating financial need and detailing provisional costs (travel and accommodation only, excluding salary, special consumables, etc)
- Short CV
- Supporting statement from supervisor at your home institution
- Please indicate the planned duration of your visit

FEBS Short-Term Fellowships
The FEBS STFs are intended to cover travel and subsistence costs of short-term visits (up to 2M, exceptionally 3M) of junior researchers, for the purpose of scientific collaboration, training or employing techniques not available at the home institution.
Eligibility criteria:
- scientists with a PhD degree (< 6Y, career breaks may be considered) or with at least one published paper as main author in an international scientific journal
- applicants must be members of the FEBS Constituent Society
- previous FEBS ST Fellows must wait ⩾ 2Y to reapply
Applications are accepted throughout the year. However, those should be submitted at least 3M before the proposed starting date.

BIF Travel Grants
The travel Grants of the Böhringer Ingelheim Foundation (BIF) supports with travel and lodging costs PhD students and postdocs who wish to visit another laboratory or attend research-orientated courses for 1-3 months. The programme welcomes proposals related to basic biomedical research. Courses must have a hands-on/practical component of at least 50% of their duration (e.g. EMBL courses or EMBO courses).
Main eligibility criteria:
- PhD and MSc students: applicants who obtained their university entrance qualification within the last 11 years prior to the planned research visit
- Postdocs: applicants who obtained their university entrance qualification within the last 13 years prior to the planned research visit
Applications are accepted all year round, but should be submitted not earlier than 6 months and not later than 6 weeks from the starting date of the planned visit.

OeAD Scholarships and Grants
The OeAD* funds or contributes to the implementation of a number of programs that promote international exchange and gain of knowledge of students and researchers at different academic stages. OeFG International Communication
This research program of the Austrian Research Foundation (OeFG) provides financial support for the following activities:
- Presentation of research results at international congresses, symposiums or workshops abroad. Events with a predominantly educational component, such as courses, summer schools, etc.. are not included.
- Organisation of small international symposiums or workshops in Austria
- Short-term stays at foreign scientific institutions to learn specific methods and techniques or to perform scientific work with resources, equipment or materials not available at the host institution, and which are part of the research project
- Hosting scientist from other institutions to participate in discussions, lectures or similar events to facilitate scientific discussion (courses not included)
Funding is to be primarily given to young scientists whose previous achievements have been of high quality and who, for formal reasons or because other funds have been exhausted, cannot receive sufficient funding by other means.
Applications can only be submitted in advance, i.e. before the travel or event takes place and the next call deadline. Under this program, the OeFG will only grant funds once per person and year.

OeAW Max Kade Fellowships
This program, offered by the Max Kade Foundation in New York, supports scientists from all disciplines who wish to visit the USA for research purposes.
Eligible are scientists who…
- …have completed their PhD within the last 10 years*.
- …can demonstrate research experience (publications commensurate with their career stage).
- …are Austrian citizens or have been resident in Austria for at least three of the last ten years.
- …have an invitation from the selected research Institution in the USA.
*Exceptions may apply, please contact us if you have questions about your specific case.
Length and level of funding:
Fellowships are for 12 months (it is not possible to apply for less). In exceptional cases, a one-time 6-month extension may be applied for.
The fellowship amounts to USD 56,500. It is given to the US host institute, which pays the fellow in monthly installments (see note below). Travel and family allowances are also granted, if applicable.
Deadline: Once a year, in June
Note: The fellow is employed solely by the US host institute during the fellowship; they are not employed by ISTA. The fellow is responsible for paying US income taxes on the money awarded.
